Yes, we all know the beginning, middle, and end, but what is the throbbing heart of the story?  Some lean toward characters. Others lean toward plot. Some are sure the theme is why a story is provocative. I find that the answer is in alchemy. The mixture of every story element makes the thing sing as a whole. This undefinable balancing act is different for every work and makes all the difference.
